S Vaikundarajan founded VV Minerals, a sand beach mining company, in 1989. For over two decades now, the company has been running under his tutelage and has grown into a profitable entity.
VV Minerals has bagged several national awards for its contribution to the export business. It is also the first company to export ilmenite and exports zircon, garnet and rutile.
VV Mineral Vaikundarajan himself is a media shy person and prefers to maintain a low-key profile. This is one of the reasons that his photos are not easily found on public domains.
Lately, the company has come under harsh criticism for illegal sand mining. VV Mineral Vaikundarajan has also been accused of having powerful political influence and several allegations have surfaced without supporting evidence. VV Mineral Vaikundarajan, however, has denied all the allegations against him and deemed them as a conspiracy by rival businesses to slander his company.
IAS Ashwin Kumar and ex-IAS V Sundaram have been forthright in these allegations. In one of his letters, V Sundaram also accuses VV Mineral Vaikundarajan of looting Rs. 96,000 crore.
The state government immediately set up an investigating committee. However, there has been no concrete evidence to suggest any illegal activities by VV Mineral India.
The company operates out of Tisayanvilai, a town 65 km from Tirunelveli city in south Tamil Nadu. Vaikundarajan is known to be a man of simple taste who wears a white shirt and dhoti.
It is a public knowledge that Vaikundarajan owns shares in Mavis Satcom that has stakes in Jaya TV. He also holds stocks in Tamil Nadu Mercantile Bank (TMB). However, this knowledge has been used unfairly by peers to coerce Vaikundarajan.
As of now, the National Green Tribunal has suspended sand mining activities in coastal areas. VV Mineral Vaikundarajan stays optimistic and states that his enterprise will soon walk clean.
